What Is a Hoyer Lift?

A Hoyer lift is a machine that gently lifts a person who cannot stand or transfer on their own. It uses a sling to support the body during the move. This keeps both the resident and caregiver safe.

Hoyer lifts are often needed for residents who:

  • Have limited mobility or are bedbound
  • Are recovering from surgery or a hospital stay
  • Live with conditions like ALS, MS, or severe arthritis
  • Need complex medical care support daily

Conditions That May Require Hoyer Lift Assistance in Minnesota

Some common conditions that may result in a person needing a Hoyer lift include:

  1. Stroke – Especially when paralysis, hemiplegia, severe weakness, or poor balance makes standing and transferring unsafe.
  2. Spinal cord injury – People with quadriplegia or paraplegia may need full mechanical-lift assistance for transfers.
  3. Multiple sclerosis (MS) – Advanced MS can cause muscle weakness, spasticity, fatigue, and loss of mobility.
  4. Cerebral palsy – Severe muscle stiffness, contractures, weakness, or impaired coordination may prevent safe independent transfers.
  5. Advanced neurological disease – Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS, or advanced dementia can cause progressive loss of strength, balance, and transfer ability.

If your loved one need help with transfer, please call us on 763-299-0025 to learn more about our program.
